Declining to discuss the problem of international copyright: "I would rather put the subject aside, in friendship towards the American people." Dickens appreciates White's comments on Tale of Two Cities (1859) and adds that Mr. Carlyle had written him with the "the highest commendation" of the books: "[Carlyle] is a dear friend of mine, and his History [of the French Revolution] inspired me with the general fancy of that story."
